ELIGIBILITY

Am I eligible to join the CMWL network?

If you are an MD, DO, or NP in good standing with the state licensing authority in which you practice, you are eligible to join the CMWL network. CMWL providers come from all medical specialties, including cardiology, OBGYN, family practice, and more. You must be approved by CMWL before joining the network.

REVENUE

How much revenue can I expect to generate with a CMWL practice?

With CMWL, there is an opportunity to generate significant revenue from your weight loss practice. The amount you generate is dependent upon a few factors:

• Patient volume
• Number of days per week practicing
• Prices you set for products and services
• Acceptance of insurance for obesity counseling

Please note that practices who accept insurance for obesity counseling can expect to generate up to over 150% more for a 15-minute obesity counseling visit than a typical insurance patient visit. With the recurring visits associated with care, this increases your annual revenue projection to be over 1500% greater than with typical insurance visits. And with the changes coming with health care reform, these numbers increase due to the incentives placed on preventive and well visits.

As an example, a patient with a BMI of 30+ who schedules weekly 15-minute visits is expected to generate over $3300 per year with the CMWL program versus $204 per year with average insurance reimbursement. If you treat just 30-40 patients a year through the CMWL practice, you can see just how much opportunity there is to manage a thriving business while delivering care that serves to prevent deteriorating health and achieve long-term health care cost savings. And with 40% of the population now identified as clinically obese, the need for these services has never been greater.

What types of obesity treatment will be covered by health insurance?

Obesity screening along with obesity behavioral counseling services are covered by Medicare and most of the large insurance companies. Sign up to access CMWL training to learn the new guidelines and the coding necessary for reimbursement.

Do I have to accept insurance to join the network?

No, it is not necessary to accept insurance for obesity screening and counseling visits to be a part of the CMWL network. The annual revenue generated per weight loss patient still outperforms that of a typical insurance patient by over 600%. However, in addition to the greater revenue opportunity afforded by accepting insurance, acceptance of insurance also lowers the barrier of access to care, resulting in an increased number of patients for your weight loss practice. We strongly encourage the members of our network to consider accepting insurance to increase revenue opportunities.

COMMITMENT

What kind of time commitment is required to run the program?

Compared to your typical insurance patient visits, the time required for visits for weight loss patients does not differ. There is a 30 to 45-minute initial visit for screening and consultation (similar to an annual physical exam), and then 15-minute follow-up visits. However, because weight loss is based on measuring progress in short periods of time and requires ongoing behavioral counseling, more visits per year are required for weight loss patients. You should be prepared to commit to the increased annual frequency of visits of weight loss patients (22 on average) versus visits for other medical reasons (3 to 4 on average).

Can Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners manage the program?

Yes, this is a very common practice in many CMWL centers. Physician Assistants must manage the program under your guidance, but the extent to which NPs can manage the program independently is dictated by State regulations.

TRAINING

How does CMWL’s training program work?

Our initial training can be accessed online, or at a live seminar. (which we strongly recommend) It provides training on the most current standards of care in obesity medicine along with a step-by-step plan to implement these into your practice. We will teach you all the skills necessary to successfully manage weight loss patients, integrate these patients into your existing practice, increase revenues, and more.

Where is training held?

Online training is available through the CMWL Provider Portal, or at a live seminar, scheduled in major US cities. Check the schedule or contact us to learn more about our events.

Is there training for my staff?

Yes, your staff can access training online and at some select live training conferences. Having a well-informed, supportive staff will yield significant benefits for weight loss patients and your practice success.

Can I earn CME credits toward board certification in obesity medicine with CMWL?

Yes. The CME credits made available through CMWL will count toward the required 50 hours of AMA Category 1 credits in obesity medicine necessary for board eligibility. It is our goal to provide continuous training that will help distinguish CMWL members as experts in obesity medicine.

In addition to CME credits, CMWL offers non-CME topics in our teleconferences and online videos to assist you in increasing the success of your practice.

Does the program focus on how to perform effective patient behavioral counseling?

Yes! This is the cornerstone of the CMWL program and facilitated by our technology platform called ObesityTx. The platform includes an engine that automatically creates personalized behavioral counseling plans for patients, and a mobile-friendly patient portal where they can complete behavioral modules and track their weight loss progress.

PRACTICE SUPPORT

Do I need to open a separate location for a CMWL practice?

Though you can open a separate CMWL location if you wish, most CMWL providers add a CMWL center on to their existing practice. This is a great way to launch a new business without the level of investment required by a franchise, and also supports continuity of care for patients within your existing medical practice. However, there are some basic requirements for your existing practice location, primarily a high-speed internet connection for use of CMWL ObesityTx

Does CMWL provide support services after I open my medical weight loss practice?

Yes, CMWL provides extensive practice support services to assist you in making your medical weight loss practice successful. These include:

• Pre-launch set-up, preparation, and troubleshooting
• Launch activities (e.g., website placement, coordination with media services depending on client tier)
• Product purchasing and shipment tracking support
• Access to CMWL Provider Portal for weight loss practice management, including ongoing training and resources, patient clinical management, and product ordering and inventory management.
• Technical support for use of the CMWL Provider Portal and BCA scale

PRODUCTS

What kinds of products does the program use?

Patients typically move through the program starting on total meal replacement products (e.g., protein shakes and bars) to regular meals, always supported by critical behavioral counseling as they move through each ‘food phase.’

CMWL meal replacement products are specially formulated to provide both the complete nutrition and satisfying taste to keep patients healthy and motivated while they work towards their long-term weight loss goals. In addition, CMWL products are branded, which keeps patients engaged and trusting in the overall CMWL program experience.

How do CMWL products factor into the clinical effectiveness of the program?

The use of CMWL products factors heavily into research. Data from weight loss patients who do not use CMWL products as part of their program cannot be included in clinical research studies.

MARKETING

How do I attract patients to my CMWL practice?

Depending on your chosen service level, CMWL can provide you with marketing and media programs that will help increase awareness of your CMWL center and drive patient leads. These programs include local online directory, pay-per-click, social media and print campaigns.

How many new patients can I expect to attract to my practice each month?

The number of new patients generated each month is highly dependent on three factors: 1) your chosen CMWL service level, 2) your geographic location, and 3) the ability to convert new leads into weight loss patients. Our media team will create geo-specific campaign analyses for you to determine expected lead volume in your area, and our practice support team will help you optimize your ability to turn leads into patients. Find out more about how CMWL will help you increase your practice development potential.

If I can generate new patients through personal referral, why should I consider media or advertising services?

Attracting new patients through referral from existing patients is one of the best ways to grow your practice. It’s important to remember that even referrals do their research, and they gather most of their information from the Internet. If you don’t have a prominent position for your CMWL weight loss practice on search engines like Google, it will be more difficult for any type of prospective patient to find you.

Can I create my own advertising campaigns?

Depending on which service level you choose, you may be able to conduct your own offline advertising campaigns, including print media, TV, and radio. Speak to a representative about your options.

CLINICAL PROGRAM

How does the CMWL patient clinical program work?

The patient clinical program is based on the premise that obesity and overweight are medical conditions that, like other medical conditions, are best treated by a medical provider. The program includes a phased approach that uses calorie-specific meal replacement products to end a patient’s food addiction while maintaining balanced nutrition. The entire program has a foundation based on personalized behavioral counseling, the key to helping patients effectively manage their weight for life. Find out more about the patient clinical program and how it works.

What is the effectiveness of the CMWL program?

In our most recent clinical study in the American Journal of Medicine (published in June 2012), obese patients achieved 11.1% weight loss in just 12 weeks. And in our previous long-term study, 95.3% of patients who followed the CMWL program were at a lower weight than their starting weight in one year (based on an original sample of 550 obese men and women who began a CMWL program, where 150 original participants continued and/or came in for a weigh in after 12 months).

CMWL is continually conducting clinical trials to improve our understanding of medical weight loss and enhance our program offerings. And with access to online reporting tools, you can also measure the clinical effectiveness of the program in your own practice. Find out more about how CMWL can benefit your patients.

COST

How much does the program cost?

CMWL offers affordable tiered member pricing based on what is suitable for your location and your interest in growing your medical weight loss practice. Schedule an appointment with a CMWL representative to learn more about the benefits of each level and what is right for you.
